South Africa: Training in the Travel Industry

Fighting Poverty Through Education

South Africa’s breathtaking landscapes – from the dreamy beaches of the Cape to the northern deserts – captivate travelers year after year. A safari to see the wildlife is a must, with the “Big Five” – elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo, lion, and leopard – on display in famous reserves such as the Kruger National Park. Tourism is a key sector of the economy, yet there is a shortage of skilled and experienced travel and tourism professionals.

To address this challenge, Tourvest Destination Management (TDM) launched the one-year “Learnership in General Travel” program. TDM is one of Southern Africa’s leading travel management groups, encompassing a range of specialist brands, including leisure and sports tourism.

In South Africa – a country rich in natural beauty and cultural diversity – TDM is deeply committed to supporting young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. Here, wealth and poverty, idyllic suburbs and crowded townships exist side by side, making social responsibility all the more vital.

Through the learnership program, offered in partnership with the educational foundation StudyTrust, TDM aims to reduce youth unemployment by providing both professional qualifications and long-term employment opportunities.

Participants gain not only theoretical knowledge but also hands-on workplace experience. They learn how to present themselves in a professional environment, interact respectfully with people of different ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds, and manage a budget. Upon completing the course in general travel and tourism studies, participants receive an official certificate recognizing their qualification.

Support from the DERTOUR Foundation

Since 2022, the DERTOUR Foundation has sponsored 14 trainees, who are mentored by staff from GoVacation Africa, TDM’s specialist brand for destination services and marketing. The trainees rotate through all departments and receive targeted training on products, processes, and guest service standards.

Since the program’s inception in 2007, more than 240 young people have completed a learnership with TDM. Most of them have remained with the company and are now valued members of the TDM family.
